Here in Georgia a lot of drainage problems occur as a result of our clay soil. Water does not readily soak into soil made of clay. It can simply puddle up until the entire yard making it soft and muddy.
Do you have a slope on your property where excess water flows creating a soggy lawn?
Normal drainage problems start during a rainstorm and can last for a few days. Heavy rain storms can send several inches of water down, leaving a mess for many homeowners. Run-off water that is improperly channeled will cause damage to and devaluation of your home. Poorly drained water can cause cracks in your home’s foundation, sinking patios, and walkways, and damaging driveways. Too much water will kill plants and create unsafe conditions in your basement or crawl space.
Drainage techniques that help eliminate standing water
Dry creek beds are basically trenches that are lined with gravel or rock. The trench starts at the point where water collects and is aimed down a slope to the desired drainage area. Lining the trench with large rocks allows it to function like art in dry weather. Sometimes resembling a natural stream while doing its job of directing water during the rainy season. The grey stones are a wonderful background to fresh green grass and they don’t fade as mulch does.
This drain was invented by an American farmer, Henry French. The French drain is a gravel-filled trench designed to facilitate water movement off the surface and into the ground. The trench can be anywhere from 8 inches to 2 feet wide and up to 3 feet deep. It is filled with drainage stone which provides a porous area for water infiltration. The trench can be filled to the surface with gravel. The trench sometimes is lined with weed fabric before it is filled with gravel to filter out sediment to slow the clogging of pore spaces.

Downspouts are designed to get water away from the foundation of a house. Splash blocks prevent water from blasting a hole in the ground but don’t carry the water away. Downspouts should discharge water 10 feet away from the house. Adapters can be used to connect a vinyl downspout to a drain tile and install below ground, leading to a suitable outlet. If no outlet is available, a pop-up outlet can be installed. A pop-up outlet is a box with a hinged lid that discharges water when the pipe is full.
