Tell us a little bit about you and your background.
I have a background in horticulture and environmental design, complemented by a degree in Horticulture. Growing up in a family that had a business in the sales and service of landscape equipment and was always gardening, I developed an early appreciation for being outside and planting new plants. My career began with a local company just mowing grass on the weekends.
What inspired you to pursue a career in landscape design?
I was inspired by the transformative power of plants and hardscapes. Witnessing how a thoughtful design could enhance a space and positively affect people’s moods drove me to pursue this career.
How has your design philosophy evolved?
Initially, my focus was on aesthetics alone, but over time, I learned that functionality and sustainability are equally important. Now, I strive to create designs that are both beautiful and beneficial to the lifestyle of busy clients.
Have there been any designers or architects who have influenced your work?
Not one in particular. I enjoy seeing all the work of everyone in the industry and seeing how it is advancing.
What makes your approach unique particularly to properties in Metro Atlanta?
My approach is rooted in understanding the unique characteristics of each site. I focus on creating outdoor spaces that reflect the homeowner’s personality while considering the local environment. This includes incorporating low maintenance plants, and plants that well adapt to the environment of each property.
How does the local climate and environment influence your designs?
The humid subtropical climate of Atlanta presents both opportunities and challenges. I design with heat tolerance and drought resistance in mind, choosing plants that thrive in this environment. I also incorporate shaded areas to provide relief from the summer heat.
Are there any specific plants and materials that you prefer for this region?
I favor native plants such as dogwoods, azaleas, and ferns, which require less maintenance and support local wildlife. For materials, I often use locally sourced stone and wood, ensuring that the designs feel connected to the landscape.
How do you address issues like poor soil quality, drainage, or uneven terrain?
I conduct thorough site assessments to understand the specific challenges presented by each property. For poor soil, I often recommend soil amendments and raised beds. For drainage issues, I design rain gardens and incorporate permeable materials to manage water flow effectively. Uneven terrain, I will use retaining walls where needed to level areas and also redirect water flow.
Can you share an example of a project where you had to think outside the box?
In one project, I was tasked with revamping a small, sloped backyard. Instead of traditional terracing, I created a series of cascading garden beds that not only managed erosion but also added visual interest and functional space for planting and seating.
Are there any trends in 2025 that you are excited about?
I’m excited about the growing emphasis on edible landscapes and permaculture principles. Homeowners are increasingly interested in integrating food production into their gardens, which promotes sustainability and a connection to the food they consume.
What is the most important thing a Client should consider before starting a project?
Clients should consider their long-term vision and how they plan to use the space. Understanding their lifestyle and preferences is crucial for creating a design that meets their needs and enhances their enjoyment of their outdoor areas.
How do you ensure the Client’s vision is included in the design?
I prioritize open communication throughout the design process. I encourage clients to share their ideas, inspirations, and concerns, ensuring that their vision is integrated into the design. Regular check-ins help keep the project aligned with their expectations.
What is your process for managing a Client’s expectations throughout the project?
I set clear timelines and deliverables from the outset, ensuring clients understand each phase of the project. I provide updates and address any concerns promptly, fostering trust and transparency throughout the process.
What advice would you give someone who is hiring a landscape designer?
Look for a designer whose style resonates with you, and don’t hesitate to ask about their approach to sustainability and local ecology. It’s also beneficial to review their past projects and client testimonials to ensure a good fit.
What is a common mistake that a homeowner or property manager can make when designing their outdoor spaces?
A common mistake is underestimating the scale of plantings. People often choose plants that are too large or too small for their space, leading to an unbalanced look. It’s essential to consider mature sizes and how plants will interact over time.
How do you hope your designs impact the lives of people who use them?
For my designs, I hope to foster a deeper connection with nature, providing spaces for relaxation, interaction, and play. Ultimately, I want my design creativity to enhance well-being and create lasting memories for those who enjoy them.
